Air Side
The airport area delimited by security/passport controls for departures
and by baggage reclaim/customs controls for arrivals, and which includes
transit areas, boarding areas, airplane lay-bys and flight runways.
Booking
Passenger or cargo booking for air transport
Centring
The balancing of the aircraft that is carried out according to the weight
of the passengers, cargo, mail, baggage and fuel.
Civil Aviation Authority’s Airport Management Office (Italy)
(DCA)
A department of the Ministry of Transport that supervises all the activity
carried out in civil airports.
Endorsement
The authorisation issued by the airline that one is flying with to use
a different airline for the same leg of one’s journey.
Finger
The boarding walkway (the final part of the Loading Bridge).
Flight Log Book
On board log used by the flight captain

Gate
The Boarding gate

Aircraft passenger shuttle
The vehicle used for transporting passengers to and from the aircraft.
Land side
The airport area before arriving at the security/passport controls for
departures and by the baggage reclaim/customs controls for arrivals. There
are no limits to transiting in this area.
Lay-by
The place where the airplanes park.
Loading Bridge
The passenger boarding bridge
Lost & Found
The office that deals with the search for and the return of lost luggage
Must go
The off-duty crew that has absolute precedence.
No-show
A passenger that has booked a ticket who does not show up for departure
Optical viewer
An instrument that allows the airplane to park in the lay-by without the
help of a parking attendant.
Overbooking
A flight is said to be “overbooked” when it has more passengers
booked for the flight than the numbers of seats available on board. According
to the Passengers’ Charter, when a passenger who has a regular ticket
and cannot depart due to overbooking by the airline, the passenger has
the right to a reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket, without any
penalty, for the part of his journey that he has not completed, or the
right to an alternative flight that suits him that takes him to his final
destination.
Ramp
The generic term used for the places and resources used for airplane assistance.
Remote information terminals
Video terminals with processors, placed next to each check-in desk that
display various types of information about flights.
Slot
The time window that a certain flight has at an airport to meet its commercial
needs (disembarkation and boarding of passengers and luggage, refuelling,
catering etc.)
Technical stop
An airplane’s landing for technical reasons, without any boarding
or disembarking of passengers.
Upper Deck
Upper deck of the Boeing 747 aircraft
Zulu time
GMT Greenwich Mean Time, a universal unit of measurement used for air
transport times.
