We recently did a travel simulation in Rome. We tried to put ourselves in the shoes of a traveler who lands at Rome Ciampino airport and has to reach the center of Rome.
Ciampino Airport to Rome City Center
Ciampino is the airport most people will land on when flying from Europe and with low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. This airport is approximately 30 minutes drive from the center of Rome.
“We will show you how to get to central Rome from Rome Ciampino airport”
There are three common ways to reach central Rome from Ciampino airport. Let’s take Termini Station as a reference
Ciampino airport to Rome by shuttle bus
The first way to reach Rome is the shuttle bus, which is the way we used to do this test. The price of the bus is 3.90 euros, however some of the other buses cost more. Expect to pay around five euros per person. It is not easy to navigate the various bus companies present outside Ciampino airport.
Keep in mind that the lines for the shuttle buses can be hectic and not all people line up in the queue, so you may be cut a lot in line, and you may have to push to get on the bus. In short, it will be necessary to fight to get on the bus, everyone wants to leave the airport and reach Rome as soon as possible.
Ciampino airport to Rome by metro
The second way to reach the center of Rome is via the metro. The closest metro station to the airport is “Casabianca”. The metro costs 1.50 euros. Casabianca station is about two kilometers from Ciampino airport, it is not advisable to reach it on foot. There are shuttle buses that you can take to the metro station for around 1 euro.
Ciampino airport to Rome by taxi
The third way to reach the center of Rome is by taxi. You will find taxi ranks outside Ciampino airport. There weren’t that many actually on the day we did the simulation. And the wait to get into the taxi to Rome was about 15 minutes.
The price set from the airport to the city center is 30 euros, however when we tried to take the taxi back from Rome to Ciampino airport, it cost us 45 euros. So beware of taxi drivers who try to scam you, ask the price before getting into the car.
Ciampino airport to Rome center: How long does it take

A good alternative, is to book in advance a Rome airport transfer service. In fact, there are many advantages.
First of all we have negotiated a very advantageous price, which varies from 45 euro to 70 euro depending on the number of people and amount of luggage.
