Ciampino Airport to Rome City Center Guide

We recently did a travel simulation in Rome. We tried to put ourselves in the shoes of a traveler who lands at Rome Ciampino airport and has to reach the center of Rome.

Ciampino is the airport most people will land on when flying from Europe and with low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. This airport is approximately 30 minutes drive from the center of Rome.

There are three common ways to reach central Rome from Ciampino airport. Let’s take Termini Station as a reference

Ciampino airport to Rome by shuttle bus

The first way to reach Rome is the shuttle bus, which is the way we used to do this test. The price of the bus is 3.90 euros, however some of the other buses cost more. Expect to pay around five euros per person. It is not easy to navigate the various bus companies present outside Ciampino airport.

Keep in mind that the lines for the shuttle buses can be hectic and not all people line up in the queue, so you may be cut a lot in line, and you may have to push to get on the bus. In short, it will be necessary to fight to get on the bus, everyone wants to leave the airport and reach Rome as soon as possible.

Ciampino airport to Rome by metro

The second way to reach the center of Rome is via the metro. The closest metro station to the airport is “Casabianca”. The metro costs 1.50 euros. Casabianca station is about two kilometers from Ciampino airport, it is not advisable to reach it on foot. There are shuttle buses that you can take to the metro station for around 1 euro.

Ciampino airport to Rome by taxi

The third way to reach the center of Rome is by taxi. You will find taxi ranks outside Ciampino airport. There weren’t that many actually on the day we did the simulation. And the wait to get into the taxi to Rome was about 15 minutes.
The price set from the airport to the city center is 30 euros, however when we tried to take the taxi back from Rome to Ciampino airport, it cost us 45 euros. So beware of taxi drivers who try to scam you, ask the price before getting into the car.

Ciampino airport to Rome center: How long does it take

One last tip to note is that the traffic in Rome can be very heavy, our bus trip from Ciampino to Rome center which should have taken 30/35 minutes ended up taking 55 minutes due to traffic. Please be aware of this when traveling from Ciampino Airport to Rome.

It will be hard to reach it, but we are sure that Rome will remain in your heart!
